With so many worthy charities that need financial help, it is often difficult to determine a special cause to support. However, with very little discussion necessary, the board of directors of the Illinois Fraternal Congress once again has elected to help finance "Camp I Am Me" for the upcoming year.

The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance "Camp I Am Me" is dedicated to helping young burn victims between the ages of 8 and 16 enjoy life as "regular kids." For one week in the summer, children have the opportunity to swim, sail, hike, fish, horseback ride, picnic, etc., with other youngsters who have been through similar life-altering experiences.

The camp is held at YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside, IL, on 278 acres of beautiful grounds. The lush surroundings add to the joy of meeting new friends and participating in activities that are not only fun, but are a learning experience.

Approximately 100 youngsters take part in the camp, which has been in existence for 13 years. Although it costs $1,000 per child, there is no charge to the family for youth participation. The camp is 100 percent financed by donations from a variety of organizations with only 11 percent being paid for overhead expenses.

"Camp I Am Me" is the only burn camp accredited by the American Camping Association and is led by a therapist, doctor, nurses, social workers, counselors, and volunteers.

"The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp, 'Camp I Am Me,' just celebrated its 13th camp," said Kathleen Haage, 13-year voluntary chairperson for the camp. "Without the financial support and awareness our sponsors give to make camp possible, our campers who have suffered a serious burn injury may never meet another burn survivor. It is difficult enough growing up today. For a child with a burn injury, growing up can be more challenging. 'Camp I Am Me' gives them the self-esteem to know the person they are on the inside is what counts in life, not what they look like on the outside."
