Make a Difference Day

October 25, 2008
Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event is Saturday, October 25, 2008.

In October, 2007, for the 17th time, millions of Americans, including members of the fraternal benefit system, reached out to help others, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.

Anyone, young and old, individuals and groups, can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. Your project can be as large or as small as you wish! Look around your community and see what needs to be done. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative.

Volunteer statistics
Forty-four percent of adults volunteer and two-thirds of these volunteers began volunteering their time when they were young.
Adults who began volunteering as youth are twice as likely to volunteer as those who did not volunteer when they were younger.
High school volunteering recently reached the highest levels in the past 50 years.
In every income and age group, those who volunteered as youth give and volunteer more than those who did not.
Those who volunteered as youth and whose parents volunteered became the most generous adults in giving time.
